Ancient Olive Groves

Olive groves are everywhere in Puglia. We came across this olive grove on our way to Otranto.  These trees are over 1000 years old!  Pretty amazing.

This region produces more olive oil than anywhere else in the world. The soils are so fertile, notice the rich red color.

  1. Is this grove actively managed. $ yield per acre?

  2. Not sure on that. There are not many left like this as they have been hit by a disease and have had to burn many of the old ones. The newer smaller trees are more resistant. The conversion from raw oil to finished product is about 7%. Average sized tree will produce about 4 liters of finished oil per harvest.
